This is the second article in a series where I explore why we compare ourselves to others and share five key facts that can impact your happiness, emotions, thoughts, and daily life.
We are constantly criticized by friends, teachers or other musicians, and the problem arises when we attach too much importance to it.
Some critics are helpful and constructive, but many of them are just noise.
We can receive a lot of contradictory information especially at the young age. That’s why we may have a disturbed sense of our own image, after all, one may praise us, the other may be not happy with our performance.
This leaves us wondering: Who is right?
In such a situation, depending on other people’s opinions, we will desperately seek references as well as confirmation of our skills or choices. This cause that our mood will constantly fluctuate depending on the feedback we receive.
To be happy, try always to filter the opinions:
keep those that can help you to improve
and forget those that can make you suffer.
To help you understand and filter opinions, I advise you to have one good supportive partner. It can be your teacher, another professional musician, or someone you trust and know that the person cares about you. If you are more mature and surer of your abilities and problems, you can follow your instincts and feelings.
But in the end of the day, try always to filter the opinions: keep those that can help you to improve and forget those that can make you suffer—not an easy task, but worth of effort!
In my next article, I’ll share more key facts that can impact your happiness when comparing yourself to others. Subscribe to this newsletter so you don’t miss any updates!
